Location and Accommodations
Located in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Santa Fe is 7,000 feet above sea level. Northern New Mexico is a high desert landscape with very dry air, high altitude, and less oxygen. We recommend arriving early to acclimate to the conditions. Some tips include drinking lots of water (an additional 50 ounces is recommended per day), take it slow to avoid overexertion in the first few days, apply sunscreen liberally (for every 1,000 feet of elevation your exposure increases by 6-10 percent), wear a brimmed hat, and be watchful of minor high-altitude sickness symptoms: headache, fatigue, lack of appetite, nausea, rapid heart rate, insomnia, and vomiting. More information will be included in your confirmation letter.
